Vietnam
Vietnam offers brilliant green rice fields, bustling city streets, grand colonial
buildings, breathtaking mountain scenery, delicious cuisine, luxurious hotels,
colorful ethnic minorities, and more.
Ho Chi Minh (or Saigon as it is still known to
many) is a vibrant city that is changing rapidly. Modern high rises are beginning to
dominate the city skyline, alongside many fine examples of French Colonial
architecture. Traditional street markets and sophisticated shopping malls exist side
by side. Day trips from Ho Chi Minh include the incredible Cu Chi Tunnels built by
Vietnamese resistance fighters and Cao Dai Temple at Tay Ninh. The Mekong Delta is a
fascinating area of fertile farmlands, lush tropical orchards, numerous canals, and
waterways. Vietnam's South central coast includes the beach resort of Nha Trang
with white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, water sports, and great seafood. Dalat
and the central highlands offer cool, spring like weather, pine forest, waterfalls,
and lakes. Many reminders of the French colonial era can be seen in the hundreds of
the European style villas and chalets still standing. Hue is one of the main
cultural, religious, and educational centers of Vietnam. The elaborate mausoleums of
the Nguyen emperors, more like palaces than tombs, are scattered around the city.
Many of Hue's attractions are found along the banks of the Perfumed River. Hanoi,
Vietnam's capital, is a unique blend of oriental and western charm. It is a city of
exotic, brightly painted temples, pagodas, elegant villas, bustling narrow streets
and alleys, grand tree-lined boulevards, and shaded lakes. The Old Quarter offers
hours of browsingyou can still find stores specializing in candlesticks,
traditional musical instruments, etc. Magnificent Halong Bay, with over three
thousand limestone islands jutting from the emerald sea, is not to be missed. Ideally
cruise among the islands on a wooden junk and feast on delicious seafood purchased
from local fishermen directly from their wooden rowing boats. Sapa and the Far North
is Vietnam's most colorful destination with vivid green rice terraces sculpted into
the mountainsides and colorful hill tribes. Cao Bang and Ba Be National Parks offers
breathtaking mountain scenery and lush tropical rainforests.
